Hard drive may be failing

i have 27" imac (mid 2011) 2.7mhz i5 processor , 12gb of ram ago , updated yosemite.
unfortunately apple care ran out few months , following recent update has started running slow , glitchy constant freezes , beach balls.

ive looked @ console , noticed few drive error messages boot drive though disc utility showing no errors.

googling drive errors gives me impression hd may on way out sad 1tb unit (with boot camp partition) , of 939gb dedicated mac 198gb used not had hard life.

machine has several external drives connected via usb2:
2tb wd mybook dedicated time machine backup
1.5tb samsung split (1tb mac personal data including itunes library & 0.5tb windows data)

writing post pain keeps freezing up!

ive purchased seperate 3.5" 1tb seagate sshd model st1000dx01 hoping use external boot drive , tried set yosemites on it, reason isn't recognised @ start , mac defaults regular boot drive. it's connected via usb , plan @ thunderbolt enclosure or brave enough swap internal if can working.

reason posting.
1. whats best way of telling whats causing glitches i.e. hard drive or other issue
2. how new external drive booting properly
3. can drive ive bought swapped internal use

advice offered.
