Unable to delete .inProgress files from trash

i have been stuck problem months. there 2 .inprogress files in trash on external hard drive used back-ups time machine. stupidly deleted them when received error message time machine being unable complete back-up , instantly regretted decision!
have tried sudo rm -rf command lines files no luck. here garble receive terminal when attempt delete either file:

danas-imac:~ dana$ sudo rm -rf /volumes/dana\'s\ back-up/.trashes/501/2014-09-09-235304.inprogress
password:
rm: /volumes/dana's back-up/.trashes/501/2014-09-09-235304.inprogress/.backup.432013984.876549.log: invalid argument
rm: /volumes/dana's back-up/.trashes/501/2014-09-09-235304.inprogress/b855bba7-18f4-406c-8b00-bb5fad053bcf/.exclusions.plist: invalid argument
rm: /volumes/dana's back-up/.trashes/501/2014-09-09-235304.inprogress/b855bba7-18f4-406c-8b00-bb5fad053bcf: directory not empty
rm: /volumes/dana's back-up/.trashes/501/2014-09-09-235304.inprogress: directory not empty

i'm wondering if can this! can't erase external drive, files "in use" , drive therefore, can't unmounted. can't reformat drive same reason. can't eject drive desktop, computer states files in use.

time machine off during these attempts. i'm running 2009 imac yosemite version 10.10.4.

if want erase external drive, , done -
boot recovery system (restart holding command-r)
open disk utility, erase hard drive.
