External hard drive used previously on a Windows based laptop

i've bought mac mini replace windows laptop has come end of days. have external hard drive have ups of digital photos on, along files want take across mac. whilst drive recognised , can view or copy files mac cannot write or delete files stored on it. believe 2tb drive, less quarter full, want make use of it. looking on website , other internet sites guess it's formatted pc, need reformatting enable write read access mac. if i'm understanding correctly have 2 options make useable backup , not lose data on it.

option one
copy files on onto macs internal hard drive. format external suit mac. copy/move files onto external.

option two
copy files onto macs internal. format external suit mac. leave files on internal. use external time machine, which, if i'm understanding correctlay, give advantage of backing whole system , not files.

question (a) understanding correct , (b) best option?

look around free driver...

ntfs-3g safe read/write ntfs driver

or pay use ones such as

paragon ntfs

, others.

if decide reformat drive, can repartition drive @ same time leave portion of drive time machine backup. , still use other side files, , maybe 3rd 1 windows if choose.

did small 1tb drive break out portion of drive emergency boot partition (for reason, seems easier find external drive emergency boot thumb drive hidden around house), , use other partition solely time machine backups 2 machines.
