How much RAM can I chuck in my Mac Pro?

hi guys :)

love mac pro, , used pretty well-informed too. while ago, , rather brave bs see on interwebs, thought i'd ask pretty (but important) few questions people think know!

  1. how ram can put in mac pro 2008 3,1 ?
    smc version (system): 1.25f4
    boot rom version: mp31.006c.b05
  2. any real advantage of using apple ram?
  3. i have 10gb ram @ moment, system either freezes or resets completely, coming 6gb of ram. if hard reset comes @ 10gb. cleaned contacts of ram , vacuumed out bit, , didn't seem make difference. ideas?
  4. while i'm here: standard drive 500gb , i'm using 4 drive bays, others data , 1 backup. best idea ssd, need full 500gb of startup drive?
thanks in advance help!

the 2008 mac pro can handle 64gb of ddr2 800mhz ram. impressive, aye? personally, don't believe there's advantage using call 'apple' ram. however, i'm huge proponent of using ecc ram in these old beasts, it's they're built for. but, have seen folks away traditional non ecc ram...i can't speak though. other world computing great resource kind of stuff, , have pretty prices. i've used them on 10 years. here's link 24gb ecc 08 classic beast: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/other world computing/64fb4mpk24gb/.

regarding freezes, anything. bad ram stick, bad video card or went hairy in osx. might try clean install (don't migrate or restore time machine backup until can verify problem gone or if persists). before that, it's wise run extended memory check overnight apple hardware test if feel you've got issue: https://support.apple.com/en-us/ht201257/.

if want keep drive bays booked, why not use super fast pcie bus waiting awesome occupy it? i'm running sonnet tempo pro dual pcie ssd in 5,1 raided speed (beating trash can @ work). news; have pretty affordable version these days....http://eshop.macsales.com/item/sonnet technologies/tsata6ssde/. boast pretty impressive speeds , @ least harness bus speed of modern sata iii ssd. worth shopping around for, , can add 2 more drives. if had 4,1 or 5,1 second dvd bay house drive since features sata upstairs.
