12" Macbook review, after having used every single laptop in Apple's lineup since 2006

i've had 15" 1st gen mbp, 1st gen 13" mba, 2nd gen 13" mbp, 2nd gen 13" mba, 15" rmbp, 11" mba ,13" rmbp , got 12" rmb, in order.
recent ones maxed out models spec-wise, exception of new rmb, thought i'd end wardrobing couple of weeks , return it.

after testing time though, changed mind. ultra-portable mac experience wanted, never quite got delivered 11" mba.

being on go, wanted 11" mba, in experience, though small, still weighted more have liked, screen resolution out of 2006 made eyes cringe constantly, enormous bezels unsightly @ best, , small trackpad constrained.
16:9 aspect ration wasn't great either, extremely little vertical screen real estate.

things put together, made real step in terms of productivity, 15" rmbp using @ time.

compromised in portability, , got 13" rmbp couple of months later, best of both worlds, though heavier , bulkier have liked.

12" rmb, on other hand, have ever wished in portable computer, , more. keyboard, despite say, fastest , tactile macbook keyboard i've typed on, , after 48 hours of getting it, typing faster on rmbp.
granted though have been touch-typing years, , on desktop keyboard switches, average in low 100s wpm.

touchpad full size, in contrast 11" mba, makes huge difference in productivity, me uses lots of gestures. force touch nifty too! i've gotten used it, old touchpad feels dull in comparison.

speaker, blown away. delivers 15" rmbp-like performance, perhaps better , louder. sure, there isn't bass talk about, that's expected speaker module small. still quite engineering marvel considered size.

finally, enjoy went usb-c, love being able connect power, mouse, keyboard, ethernet, external drives , forth single cable. it's brilliant machine docking.
sure, you'll have adapters, new flashdrives , cables, again that's gonna case anyway few years now, might started on early.
, while agree having had 2 c ports have been useful, having 1 not deal braker means.

worried core m, coming i7, , hearing reviewers said, in experience it's been optimized well, never reminded of being on mobile processor.
running 2 vms on vmware works smoothly butter, whilst having plenty of other apps open on other desktops.
lightroom 24mb raw files in batches slower on rmbp, still workable.
driving 4k display @ 30hz doable, though 30hz may bit low uses.
60fps 1080p video playback works without issues @ all.
30fps 4k video playback slows down bit, can still play smoothly enough depending on compression/bitrate/codec.

if have heavy lifting work, fire ssh or vnc, , connect 24 core xeon server 96gb of ram , pcie ssd storage, , done in few minutes. that's have done anyway maxed out rmbp 15", no change there really.

side note, other reviews have mentioned, can charged off standard external power bank high-enough amps.
game changer frequent travelers , on-the-go people though external batteries older macs available, weighted tons, costed hundreds of dollars, , worked sub-optimally.
this, can run off-the-grid days decent power bank.

in all, best portable machine have ever had among macs i've owned on last 10 years. wished on true-ulraportable machine. sure, has limits processing-power wise, me pros far outweigh cons, , yet find doesn't run smoothly on rmbp every-day usage. granted though, don't resource-intensive work locally.

rmbp 13" sale. though have gone , forth between powerful , portable laptops every new one, think technology has come such way, portable ones onwards.

tl;dr

awesome mac, best have ever had, bar none, compared portable macs have had since 2006.
ever wished in portable machine. less powerful on paper, fine every day use.

light , thin have physically open backpack/briefcase , check if have me before leaving. joy carry around. dream docking-machine connecting peripherals single cable.

love being able charge off power bank, meaning can taken off-the-grid days decent one.

very similar have owned major revisions of macbook pro , air. dropped air similar reasons, both 11' & 13" display tragedy, wasn't great when air released , hasn't gotten better. retina macbook pro`s solid performers, 13" retina being apple`s balanced portable mac. footprint , @ times ferocious operating temperatures of 15" rmbp can become tiresome when on go, 13" rmbp being "sweet spot" many.

retina macbook fast becoming "goto" mac, profession gets me around world, off "beaten track" in field 13" rmbp & 12" rmb, macbook literally hauled everywhere, far has performed superbly dealing typical ms office productivity workload across 10-15 spaces; heavyweight engineering related documents & spreadsheets, , proprietary engineering applications.

15" rmbp system own, equally retina macbook available on skylake platform can see both primary & secondary field systems being 12" macbook. performance, versus portability, coupled 1 of best displays in business, makes extremely compelling argument. should project require more significant performance 15" rmbp available, apple deliver major update skylake rmbp.
