Intel Announces Thunderbolt 3 With USB-C, Single-Cable Support for Dual 4K Displays at 60Hz

intel today @ computex 2015 unveiled thunderbolt 3 usb type-c connector, instead of mini displayport, , support usb 3.1, displayport 1.2 , pci express 3.0, outlined ars technica. new spec's thunderbolt transport layer provides 40gbps throughput, double max bandwidth of thunderbolt 2, alongside optional 100 watts of power charging devices in accordance usb power delivery spec, or 15 watts of power without usb pd.

thunderbolt 3 capable of driving 2 4k external displays @ 60hz or single 5k display @ 60hz running off single cable. dell , other manufacturers use dual-cable solution 4k , 5k external displays, since current displayport/thunderbolt spec not provide enough bandwidth drive high-resolution monitors. thunderbolt 3 supports more protocols other i/o controller, making compatible virtually dock, device or display.

intel expects initial products thunderbolt 3 start shipping before end of year, , ramp in 2016. thunderbolt 3 rumored launch alongside intel's next-generation skylake chips, succeeding broadwell line, later year, , new spec theoretically included in skylake-based macs possibly released in late 2015. refreshed macs gain usb-c ports integrated thunderbolt 3 all-in-one solution.
