Copying Time Machine backups to new drive increases the size

hi there,

not sure else turn, else knows how fix issue. had bad ram on imac corrupt external tm backup drive. tm says can't use write mount can copy files off. in process of copying backups.backupdb folder using new imac, noticed it's blowing >4x larger on new drive. i'm running out of space , can't copy backups (~500 gb of backups has filled 2 tb drive 1/2 of data copied).

know how fix issue? i've tried copying via finder, using cp , rsync. i'm tempted copy disk image see if solves it... absolutely need data , unmounting , remounting takes forever, it's making me nervous.

thanks!

you might able use disk utility "restore" tm partition new disk image...i'm not sure. can restore new drive or partition, giving new 1 proper amount of space.

problem you're having because tm backup folders contain multiple "hard links" identical files. hard links take little space finder sees them actual files. it's fundamental how time machine works.

if don't mind not having version history of files , files have deleted (the stuff can via time machine) copy latest backup folder in tm backup folder. or, being more selective, need out of folder.
