2010 MacBook Pro - upgrade or replace?

i'm using 15" 2010 macbook pro (2.4 intel core i5, 4 gb ram), , seems pretty slow , clunky - , i'm getting tired of seem endless spinning beach balls. i'm getting lot of "unresponsive script" pop-ups, , don't know if website problems or computer problems.

know battery needs replacing - 2nd battery machine has had on 1300 cycles , notation says "replace soon", seems pretty obvious. i'm pretty sure hard drive replaced new ssd drive - altho i'm sure nobody in house adept enough it. don't know how speed increase doing compare speed of new macbook pro retina screen.

i've been looking @ refurb 13" 2015 macbook pro retina screen @ apple store. i'm not sure how eyes feel changing screen size. i'm in less 1% of people left residual vision problems post cataract surgery, , don't know if benefits of retina screen offset downgrade in screen size. i've never used smaller 15". don't travel, , use laptop around house. i'm not power user means, doing email, web surfing (lots , lots of web surfing), , word processing, iphoto, etc. - pretty basic stuff. don't know i'd ever feel comfortable spending money 15" macbook pro retina screen cost, think options update 2010 model or go 13" macbook pro retina screen.

wonder retina screens - use large font when doing email , web browsing because it's easier on eyes. using large font negate benefits of retina screen? retina screen tend result in less eye strain?

i'm "newbie" here, not newbie macs, since i've never used other mac - we've gone towers became expensive imacs way cool @ time, in old age prefer spend time being couch potato laptop. think 13" better fit surfing while on couch, concern eyes - have very, dry eyes due auto-immune disease (sjogrens), , whatever make things easier on eyes big consideration.
again, money @ point.

guess that's more enough questions piled 1 post - input appreciated!
