hello, got latest version of yosemite running on 2008 imac. not ideal chugs along okay. kids use mainly. had problems can't seem solve , need advice , with. computer allegedly had healthy shut down (not forced or plug pulled out of wall) , next time boot attempt made, the progress bar make 40% of way go grey screen cursor visible. it stuck , not here on. @ point did sorts: recovery mode disk utility, permissions , disk repair. came fine. did fsck multiple times in single user mode after this. tried boot safe mode; it'd stuck @ 40% , nothing. cleared nvram boot recovery, turn off wireless, restart unit no luck. nothing worked. tried verbose boot, monitored happening. let me paraphrase of errors in no particular order: disk0s2 warning; diskarbs not working, no write appearing complaints bootplaylist directory not existing, install_cleanup. think directories stated /var/db/ keeps saying needs rebuild apple kext kernal or cache, think s

earlier year 1 of 2tb drives failed , lost whole drive. wasn't worried got me worried real personal info. have decided buy external raid enclosure. have looked @ newegg, owc , apple. found decent little enclosure newertech, guardian maximus. thought great idea until read this: "thing worked great quite awhile, enclosure's electronics failed. biggest problem can't insert old data (on existing drives) , reuse them. told newer technology enclosure reformats drive when inserted. there goes sound backup strategy." there raid enclosure won't this? it's bad enough have worry hdds failing, have worry unit fail , force me erase drive if enclosure breaks.   fwiw, drobo let move drives failed unit drobo of same or newer model , data should still show up. fortunately haven't had try that, drobos have been running years. there lot of hate drobo due high prices, expe

i ordered 13" rmbp 256 gb , 16gb ram, after many sleepless nights trying decide between , 15". don't use mac used when in college. these days tons of reports, , keynote presentations. surf web , watch movies , tv shows. when in college, used 3d modeling , make blue prints. tried convince myself of 15" because, doesn't want have best thing? however, tried remain objective , realistic needs vs wants. having 15" having expensive sports car in city can't go past 30 due heavy traffic. underused. 15" upgrade addition of broadwell , force trackpad. think apple wait @ least next year bring redesign macbook pro line (different colors, thiner, wireless charging, whatnot). hope can out if new mbp, , whenever need change again, new redesign , not internal upgrades. although, still hanging iphone 4s because don't design of iphone 6. doesn't happen mbp redesign if ever happens.

(thank dog time machine) anyway.... got imac new 1tb hd, booted , recognised required data , appeared doing great job. post restart , failed boot (recognised hd , general machinations though gray screen revolving single color wheel of death) tried rebooting no avail. disconnected ext devices, ethernet , shut down wifi router - no joy tried rebooting , did: smc nvram (never got far) recovery mode safe , verbose boots - no joy either (hanging before gets far. did reboot in recovery mode - zip doesnt far absolutely nothing!!! gut feel there nothing wrong hd in first place , no effort undertaken see whether a) hd ok and; b) no effort done "retrieve data. suggestions or experience? forward constructive opinions andrew
